見つけたもの

この絵は何を描いたものですか？何か意味はありますか？
ーそう尋ねられ、よく分からないと答えたら、がっかりしますか？
絵を描くことは創るというより、見つけることに近いと言ったら、どう感じますか？

既にビジョンがあり、スケッチを重ねながら、描き上げていく作家もいるでしょう。
が、私にとって絵を描くプロセスは、嵐がじわじわと近づいてくるようなもの、
あるいは写真が徐々に現像されていくようなものです。
あらかじめわかっているわけではなく、少しずつ絵が姿を現してきます。
だから、それは創作であると同時に、見つける工程なのです。
私自身、完成して初めて、その図柄や物語に出会うことになります。

とはいえ、こうした絵は全く無から生まれるわけではありません。
むしろ深い思考や体験によって育まれたものです。
夢に似たものと捉えると、理解しやすいかもしれません。
夢は自分の思考や経験の断片からできています。
それらの要素がばらばらに分解され、再構築されて夢として現れます。
その夢の意味は、誰しもよく分からないものです。
同じように、私も自分の絵の意味は曖昧で、はっきりと言い表せません。
絵の中から親しみあるものを見つけることもあれば、
奇妙で見慣れないものを見つけることもあります。

絵の中心に現れるのは常に風景です。
それは自分が育った場所や旅で訪れた場所など、実在する場所の記憶からきています。
田舎であれ、都会であれ、風景はさまざまな要素の干渉によって形成されています。
建物や道のような人工物であったり、時や季節、天候のような自然現象の移ろいであったり、
いずれも固定された恒久的なものではありません。
私はそうした、間にあるもの、つまり時間や場所、あるいは現実と非現実など、
多層な要素の合間にあるものに心を惹かれます。

旅や物語も、私の描く絵と深く結びついています。
旅人が旅先で見聞した景色を語るとき、それは必ずしも事実ではありません。
イタロ・カルヴィーノは『見えない都市』の中で、
マルコ・ポーロがクビライに語ることを空想的に書いています。
「都市もまた夢と同様、欲望と恐怖で築かれております。
語りの筋道は隠されており、規則は不条理で、視点は欺くもの。
すべての構成要素が他の何かを隠しているのです」。
私の絵もまた、現実と虚構、観察と想像の合間に見つけたものからできているのでしょう。

1960年ロンドン生まれ。
ロイヤル・カレッジ・オブ・アート美術学部修士課程修了。卒業後はヘラルドリー、紋章などへの深い造詣からロゴのデザインなどを手掛け、グラフィックデザイナーとして活動。
長年、アートカレッジにて教鞭を取る。
その間、建築への想いが募り、建築を修士課程まで修める。
2018年、これまでの創作活動を総括するため絵画に回帰。
建物、道など人による造形物と、自然の景観との関係性を追求する。
心の故郷であるウェールズほか、世界各地を旅しながら、その心象を描く。ロンドン在住。

found things

If I were asked, “what does this painting show? What does it mean?” and I reply, “I’m not quite sure,” would you be disappointed?
If I said that painting is less about creating and more about discovering, how would you feel?

Some artists might already have a clear vision, layering sketches until the work is complete, however, for me, making a painting is like seeing a storm approach or seeing a photograph gradually developing.
It’s not something preconceived; rather little by little, an image takes shape.
So it is both an act of creation and a process of finding.
Only when the work is finished do I discover its patterns and narrative for the first time.
That said, these paintings are not born from nothingness. Rather, they are nurtured by deep thought and experience.
Perhaps it’s easier to understand them as something like dreams.
Our dreams are made from fragments of our thoughts and memories.
These elements are broken apart and recombined into something new.
The same as dreams, their meaning is often unclear, even to myself.
Sometimes familiar things appear; other times, strange and unfamiliar images emerge.

The landscape is always at the centre of my work.
These places where things happen comes from my memories of the places I grew up or I have visited on my travels.
Whether rural or urban, landscapes are formed by the interplay of many elements.
Man made things like buildings and roads, or the shifting natural phenomena of time, season, and weather, none of these are fixed or permanent.
I am drawn to what lies in between: the layers between time and place, reality and unreality.

Travel and stories are deeply connected to the paintings I create.
When travellers describe their journeys, their accounts are not always factual.
As Italo Calvino wrote in Invisible Cities that recounts Marco Polo’s dialogues with Kublai Khan: “Cities, like dreams, are made of desires and fears, even if the thread of their discourse is secret, their rules are absurd, their perspectives deceitful, and everything conceals something else.”
In a similar fashion, my paintings are made from what I have found between reality and fiction, observation and imagination.

David Phillips
David was born in London in 1960.
He completed a Master’s in Fine Art at the Royal College of Art.
After graduating, he worked as a graphic designer, designing logos and other designs, drawing on his deep knowledge of heraldry and coats of arms.
He taught at art college for many years.
During this time, his passion for architecture grew, and he completed a Master’s degree in architecture.
In 2018, he returned to painting to summarise his creative work to date.
He explores the relationship between man-made structures such as buildings and roads and natural landscapes.
He paints his work while traveling around the world, especially his spiritual home of Wales.
He lives in London.
